St Andrew’s School for
Girls is a Christian school situated on the eastern
side of Johannesburg in beautiful surroundings. The
school offers a wealth of opportunities for young
women to embrace.
Our academic programme is challenging and
imaginative, designed to foster intellectual
curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. It is
essential that all in our charge are equipped to
take on the challenges of change and progress.
Bus services are available on certain routes. Both
the preschool and junior school offer aftercare
facilities.
Preschool
We cater for boys and girls from three months to
five years. Our groups are small and each child
receives individual attention and plenty of love and
care. There is a large, beautiful playground. We
have a holistic approach to learning and aim to
educate each child in all aspects of development –
socially, emotionally physically, musically,
creatively and linguistically.
Junior School
Our Junior School (grade 0 – 7) nestles against
Gillooly’s Hill. The girls learn in cheerful
classrooms and spend their breaks and lunch times in
beautiful gardens playing chess, chatting or using
the playground equipment. The premises is secure and
the children learn in a hurt-free environment.
The school has a specially equipped science
laboratory, a comprehensive library, an art room
with its own kiln and two computer rooms. St
Andrew’s employs a multi-disciplinary team of
therapists to whom girls are referred as and when
the need arises. There are numerous opportunities
for extra-curricular activities and a wide range of
sporting disciplines are on offer.
Senior School
St Andrew’s continues to achieve excellent
Independent Examination Board matric results. For
the 22nd year in succession we had a 100% pass rate
with 25% of our girls achieving 5 or more As. Our
teachers are exceptional.
People ask “Why a girls’ only school?” This is, of
course the preference of the individual, but the
latest international surveys tend to highlight
several very important reasons why this is
increasingly becoming the option of first choice.
Boys and girls differ fundamentally in their brain
development and function. Girls tend to be more
contemplative, collaborative, intuitive and verbal.
Girls’ schools are able to adopt learning styles
that recognize the way in which girls learn. As a
result there is no activity or subject area of the
school in which girls do not hold the positions or
excel. This leads to what is often described as the
‘can-do’ philosophy. There is time for individual
attention and academic extension. The girls are able
to explore a range of extra-curricular activities
and outings to ensure that they are truly “Skilled
for Life.”
Sports
We are a top sporting school and have provincial
and national representation in most sports. We
believe that healthy minds and bodies are achieved
through offering swimming, diving, rowing, hockey,
netball, athletics, tennis, squash and golf. Our
facilities are excellent. The aquatic centre houses
a diving well, indoor 10-lane pool and a 4-lane
learn-to-swim pool. Hockey is played on a water
based astroturf.
Cultural activities
Drama, music, and art are popular matric
subjects. Numerous clubs (eg Writer’s Club,
photography) public speaking and debating are
offered. Our girls have excelled in national
performances in the arts and eisteddfods. The
choirs, orchestras and marimba bands perform
regularly.
Community service
Community service is a core component of life at
St Andrew’s. Girls are expected to participate in
various community service opportunities as well as
participate in the President’s Award Youth
Development programme. Our school outreach programme,
Ubambiswano was established in 1990.
Boarding
Our stunning, modern boarding house caters for
80 girls. Weekly and full-time boarding options are
available to girls from grade 8 – 12. We welcome
girls from all over South Africa and abroad into
our happy, comfortable, and friendly environment.
‘Skilled for Life’, our mission statement, means
lifelong skills for living in the exciting world of
the 21st century. We aim to produce young women who
will make a difference in their communities
