A Brief History of Sagewood
Sagewood started with 16 children in 1985 in a flat in
Cyrildene, moved to Bedfordview in 1986 where it had 70
pupils and was registered with the T.E.D. By 1987 it was
running in Bertrams with 170 children, and in late 1987
moved to the old Johannesburg Children’s Home in
Observatory with 200 children, growing to about 300 by
1992.
In 1992, thanks to a donation of R11 million from the
Anglo American and De Beers Chairman’s Fund, the school
moved to its current 25 hectare site in Midrand, where
it’s custom-designed facilities now stand.
In these excellent facilities the school has continued
to develop its high standards and innovative teaching
methods. Its high achievement has been proven by its
repeated 100% matriculation pass rate, its successful
graduates, its showing in external competitions of all
sorts, and its happy, settled school atmosphere

Here at Sagewood we teach the children through play,
they learn about the value of learning, reading,
experiencing new things and about families, they
experience many facets of life through visits to our
library, outings to cultural villages, Zoo’s and visits
from the Fire Station and even a vet during pet week.
The children have a weekly theme and we expose them to
as many different forms of learning and encourage
individuality in all of them. Music is a
valuable part of our curriculum and allows the learners
free expression in the form of movement and playing of
instruments.
Our PTA is very involved and often has socials and
family events, thus supporting their children in
everyway!
Our Pre-Primary School uses a child-centred approach
with a well-structured programme of daily routines

in the very young child, and strengthen their learning
abilities. Our beautiful custom-designed facilities
allow a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities to
be effectively supervised, whilst giving the children a
sense of space and freedom to explore and grow in both
mind and body.
Our qualified, caring, experienced staff prepares

Some comments from one of our Parents’ about Sagewood
Preparatory….
“My
son has been at Sagewood for 5 years now, he started in
the Pre-Primary. My son is a very gentle soul and I was
looking for a school where he would be accepted as an
individual and be nurtured and loved for who he was.
The small classes and passionate teaching staff really
brought my son out of his shell. He is now excelling in
all he does. Even when we have hit a speed bump the
teachers and staff have been available to me and
supported me through it all. I feel secure in the
knowledge that my child is getting the best education
and when they say we educate the whole child they really
mean it. All areas are developed and nurtured, whether
academic, sports, arts and culture or other activities.
Everybody has strengths and all are taken into account.”
Sagewood is a united and
diverse school—a true reflection of how all children
should learn to interact.
Our learners have a distinct feeling of belonging. A
community built on family values from all cultures.
Building a nation through education is our passion!

A word or two
from the principal, Mr Colin Stevens:
I believe high school education is a
relatively easy concept if the fundamentals are in
place. These basics are mutual respect, resources,
resolve (from both teachers and learners) support and
input from our parents.
At Sagewood we have all of these
fundamentals in place and more. As society has one
constant, change, we as educators have to constantly
strive to adapt while doing what teachers have been
doing for centuries: get learners through the curriculum
in order to prepare for “real life”. For the most part
we are getting it spot on, but no organisation can rest
on its laurels and Sagewood is no exception.
My vision is to make Sagewood a
bastion of 21st century education with the vital human
element. I will in the next 5 years strive to bring into
the classroom more technological resources that will
enhance the learners’ learning, increase the learner
numbers, while still keeping the classes small and live
up to the mantra that “every child counts and is an
individual”.
All of this will happen with all the
basics of the 3R’s still firmly in place. I sincerely
believe that Sagewood must be the school of choice for
anyone who wants their child to be fully able to take up
their rightful place in our very dynamic world!
As Einstein once said; "Great
spirits have always found violent opposition from
mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man
does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices
but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence."
What our learners are saying:
·
“It’s a cool school, everyone knows my name”.
·
‘I am learning more because my class is small”.
·
“Our teachers know us and can therefore help us when we
are struggling”.
· “I
enjoy my soccer here”.
·
“My teachers have high expectations of us”.
·
“When I am done here, I know that I will be a success
because I have always been given
recognition for being me!”
