Special Needs School

SOWLE Centre is a Christ driven non-profit organisation with the aim of educating higher functioning children with Down Syndrome and Special educational Needs to the highest possible level attainable by each pupil. Our aim is to grow the strong points and nurture the weak points of each child as well as to integrate therapies into learning time.

At SOWLE Centre we are followers of Jesus. We seek to show love, care and respect to everyone.

We meet every challenge by growing and learning together.

Sowle Centre began because of a little boy ready to enter reception year in January 2011. He has been diagnosed with Down syndrome and his parents were struggling to find an appropriately stimulating learning environment for him.

Sowle Centre evolved because we quickly realised that children with various special needs could also receive quality schooling, thanks to the skills that we developed from giving quality education to children with Down Syndrome.

Our school caters for children who do not "fit" into remedial education classes as they are most conventionally classified. This is because these children may be more than two years behind in their development, but the unique environment and curriculum at our school afford the children the ability to learn through hands-on activities and play, rather than mainstream "paper-based" learning. We adapt the environment and learning styles we offer to suit each child, rather than trying to mould a child into a table and chair based environment.

Our ongoing observation-based assessment ensures that learners are constantly challenged, and progress is a focus.

Sowle Centre is an independent school and a member of ISASA. It means that we have the freedom, within the boundaries set by the South African Education Act, to provide the appropriate environment and curriculum for our children's special needs. We intend to continue to grow the school and grow up with our children, taking them into functional adulthood.

Therapy and Extra-mural activities

SOWLE Centre believes in a holistic approach to each child's educational needs and abilities. Therefore occupational therapy, speech therapy and extra-mural activities plays an important role as part of what we offer. Although our Therapists are not SOWLE employed and have their own practices, we have well-established, cross-functional and integrated relationships between Therapists, Educators and Parents. Feedback is offered after sessions on how, as Educators, we can implement therapies into our daily activities and routines, ensuring continuous, therapy-orientated learning throughout the course of the day. Parents can however continue with outside Therapists but it should be under the proviso that feedback and information sharing will be allowed between the school and outside Therapists.

Therapy is scheduled during the normal school day from Monday-Thursday and are either group-based (2-3 children at a time) or individually-based, thereby saving Parents' time as well.
