About us
As one of five schools on
the campus the Boys' Prep enjoys the best of both
worlds, being independent and part of the greater Saints
community.
The Headmaster and Executive are responsible for the
delivery of curriculum within the school while
subscribing to the ethos and philosophies and beliefs
which guide the entire College. Furthermore, this is
done in accordance with the legislation which is defined
at Provincial and National levels.
As the student population varies from boys who just
moved into Grade 3 right through to teenagers in Grade 7
ready to move up to College the school has to cater to
the learning requirements commensurate with this
challenge.
A number of programmes, the curriculum as well as a wide
range of experiences which include our Ivory Park
outreach assist in the boys' development. Combined with
the dedication, skills and experience of our
professional and caring staff we continue to strive to
ensure that we are indeed a South African School making
a world of difference.
Throughout their Prep careers the boys progressively
take on more responsibility as they progress through the
school. In Grade 6 the boys take part in the Game of
Life where they are taught the basic economic skills
they will need and build on throughout their lives.
In Grade 7 the boys partake in a Development Programme
which aims to encourage them to realise their full
potential and assists each individual in his
intellectual, social, cultural, spiritual and physical
development. It furthermore encourages them to take part
in all school activities and develops within them an
awareness of their responsibilities, fosters leadership
and develops character.
The Boys Prep is, as part
of St. Stithians College. is blessed with facilities
built on the vision and actions of over half a century
of investment in line with the original founders.
In the academic arena we have, aside from the normal
classrooms, two fully equipped Computer Labs, a modern
technology centre, a wonderful library as to other
College facilities such as science laboratories and
lecture theatres. Each classroom has a network attached
PC and the Library has a hub of computers too.
We already make use of data projectors as teaching aids
in three locations and are presently assessing the use
of tablets and response systems in conjunction with the
data projectors as we identify the need to use
technology to further enhance the teaching and learning
within the school.
The facilities available for the active participation in
a wide range of sports too is a wonderful blessing of
which we are proud. The sports fields allow for
participation in cricket, hockey, football, rugby,
athletics, cross-country running, tennis, squash,
swimming and water polo. The boys are encouraged to take
part in at least one sport, many are involved in more
than one.
The recent addition of lights has turned the Boy's Prep
sports field into a hive of activity and is the home to
one of the largest football clubs in the region thanks
to the Stithian Association's efforts.
From a cultural perspective, aside from the normal art
and drama classrooms, we share the campus music centre
and have exceptionally well coached marimba bands as
well as a whole range of music instruments taught.
Academics
St Stithians Boys' Prep is
a school within a school. We are part of a co-ordinate
model which is both unique and dynamic in concept. The
interaction of ideas between the different schools
serves to enhance the scope of every facet of education.
Academics in the Boys' Prep is a beneficiary of this
interaction.
We embrace the principles of Outcomes Based Education
which we believe best serves the emerging democracy in
South Africa. Boys are taught not only relevant content,
but emphasis is also placed on skills and values. An
integrated curriculum allows for the natural links
between learning areas to be explored to their fullest.
Assessment is an integral part of planning in which boys
are involved. Strong emphasis is placed on meeting the
different learning styles of boys to enable to each
individual to develop his potential.
The New Revised Curriculum Documents are central to our
planning and we at St Stithians Boys' Prep. are excited
about the direction that education is taking in South
Africa.
